Hey guys!
Hopefully, you have all heard of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11 of this year. 18 Japanese prefectures have been affected by these natural disasters, with the death toll currently at 12,431 …people, and the number of missing people surpassing 15,000. Also, more than half a million people have been displaced from their homes as a result of the tsunami.
If you’re wondering what you can do to help Japan, look no further. PHHS’ UNICEF Club is selling t-shirts, with the proceeds going DIRECTLY to UNICEF USA’s Japanese Earthquake Relief Effort. UNICEF and its’ partners have been mobilizing efforts to provide supplies for the Japanese children affected by the earthquake/tsunami, donating recreation kits, children’s underwear, school supplies, and clean drinking water for the Fukishima/Miyagi prefectures, who have been particularly hard-hit by the earthquake.
The design for the shirt is symbolic of the effort to rebuild following the earthquake, depicted by three characters lifting up a red circle (symbolizing Japan). These three characters are actual people that have been affected by the earthquake/tsunami, with the leftmost person being Hideaki Akaiwa, who has been depicted by international media as a hero for scuba-diving into the wreckage of his home to save his mother and wife. The middle figure is supposed to represent the Faceless 50, a group of approximately 200 workers who work in shifts of 50 to fix the damaged reactors at the Fukishima Nuclear Plant. The man on the right was often featured in the earthquake/tsunami’s media coverage, as he went around wearing a sign of his missing wife, in hopes of finding her.
Anyway, these shirts, printed on American Apparel unisex tees, are only $10, and will be sold on a PRE-ORDER ONLY basis, with the last day to order being Friday, April 15th. NOTE: If you order but do not pay the UNICEF officers by the 15th, your order will NOT be placed.
So make sure you CLICK THIS to be redirected to the event, pre-order your size, and pay any UNICEF officer by THIS FRIDAY.
Thank you for supporting this cause. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! UNICEF members will also get one activity for purchasing this tee!
2011-2012 OFFICER ELECTIONS
Hi all,
Next week on TUESDAY, APRIL 5TH, we will still have a meeting for UNICEF per usual.
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO BE PRESENT. We will be voting for UNICEF’s future PRESIDENT and VICE PRESIDENT!
UNICEF hasn’t had a new President for three years, so this is a very crucial election!
When voting, please try to vote honestly, with disregard to who your friends are voting for. Who do you think will be best in leading UNICEF?
If you want to make an informed decision, I suggest you talk to the candidates or any of the graduating officers yourself.
For anyone that wants to run but didn’t pick up an application today during lunch, the application is attached to this post! Please fill it out and turn it in to me by next Tuesday. If you’re running for President and VP, you MUST turn in your application to me before this Thursday. The best way to turn it in to me is probably through email (just type up your responses), since I’m usually busy during break and lunch.

New Year Resolutions
Hey UNICEF members! It’s the start of a new year, 2011, and everyone should start off the new year with a good deed. :D Make a New Year’s resolution by filling out a slip of paper where you write down a “broad resolution.” Ask yourself what you want to do that will make the world a better place. It must relate to UNICEF in a way! Remember to fill out only the top part. Turn the slip into the officers and they will return the slip back to you with the “what you can do” section filled out. Members must fulfill that goal in order to complete their resolution! Each resolution is worth 1 activity. :)
UNICEF Hoodies!
Please fill out the form through the attached link if you plan on ordering AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. All of the details for the hoodies can also be found in the link.
Thanks!
CLUB YEARBOOK PICTURES
Sorry for the EXTREMELY late notice, but UNICEF will have its Yearbook picture TOMORROW during the first half of lunch since the yearbook picture on Tuesday came as a complete surprise to all of us (and epicly failed). If you can make it, PLEASE come and wait in front of Mrs. Kuhn’s classroom!
The U.S. Fund for UNICEF and MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell announce a new fundraising campaign to provide more than 46,000 school desks to classrooms in Malawi – a country where the quality of education is very poor. The groundbreaking project, “K.I.N.D.: Kids in Need of Desks,” aims to help students in Malawi by improving conditions of classrooms. This unique partnership will specifically target 172 schools in four of Malawi’s priority districts: Blantyre Rural, Dedza, Kasungu, and Lilongwe Rural East & West. Donations will help achieve our goal of providing a safe and stimulating learning environment for deserving kids. (via K.I.N.D.| msnbc.com)
